Welcome to Our Library

Our modern and airy school Library provides a focal point for students, parents and teachers to connect, share literature and access quality teaching resources. Our school library boasts one of the most extensive primary library collections on the Sunshine Coast with a wide variety of literature to suit all levels and interests. The library also contains a computer hub which is used during library lessons, at break times and is also accessed by classes to assist in learning tasks.

The importance of our library reflects the strong reading culture in place at Chevallum, which promotes quality literature and encourages students to view reading as a life long pursuit for both education and recreation and to develop them as critical readers.

Library Lessons

Each class has a library lesson with our specialist Teacher Librarian each week. These lessons support units of work being undertaken in the classroom. They promote encourage and enthuse children to read quality literature and to have fun while being immersed in reading and writing experiences.

Readers Cup Success

Our school has a proud tradition of participating in the “Readers Cup”. This event is run annually by the Qld branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) and involves students from state and private schools from across Queensland.

Readers Cup is organised by the Qld Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a state wide competition for young readers. Teams of four students together read a set of books, and then compete with other school or public library teams to answer quiz questions from the books.

Readers Cup competitions challenge students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading. It allows readers to compete at a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other students with an equal passion for books.

Chevallum State School has been Sunshine Coast Regional Readers Cup Champion seven times, state runner up for two consecutive years and in 2011 won the state title with another fantastic team effort.

Our success in Readers Cup is a reflection of the reading culture at Chevallum, the ability of our students to embrace a challenge, self manage their learning and work cooperatively as a team to achieve their best. They also never forget to enjoy the experience along the way.

Congratulations to all our hard working teams throughout the years. To learn more about Readers Cup visit the website.   www.readerscup.org.au

Book Week and Book Fair

We celebrate Book Week each year with a Book Character Parade, special activities and events focusing on fun and in keeping with the shortlisted books and the theme of the year. Each year we also hold a very successful Book Fair and with the tremendous support of our book loving families are able to raise enough funds to purchase substantial new resources for the library.

Library Use

The library is open daily at lunch and afternoon tea and children are encouraged to borrow books, share reading with friends, draw, play board games, use our computer hub for educational activities or simply take some time out from their school day. Students have the use of the library itself as well as the large library deck which is very popular. The library is open most days at lunch and afternoon tea and children are encouraged to borrow books, share reading with friends, draw, play board games, use our computer hub for educational activities or simply take some time out from their school day. Library Leaders and Monitors

We have a Library Monitor Training Program for our upper school students which is conducted at various times during the year. Our Library Monitors assist in loans, shelving, lunchtime activities and special library events such as Book Week and Book Fair. Library Leaders were introduced  to assist with library duties and help make the library a good place to be. Library Leaders must also model good reading behaviour and love of literature to the school community.

Borrowing Books

Students from Prep to Year 7 are actively encouraged to borrow books during lessons and also at lunch and afternoon tea.  All students must have a Library Bag to borrow items as this assists in keeping our books in good condition so all student may enjoy them. Please ensure that Library Bags include both first and last name of student.

Parent Helpers

We are happy to welcome any parents who wish to help in the library or to cover books, please contact the Library directly to arrange a suitable time and to find out more about helping out. Your help will be very appreciated.
