Regional Readers Cup Champions

2/06/2016
Congratulations to Chevallum - Regional Readers Cup Champions
Another awesome performance by the Chevallum Readers Cup team has resulted in them taking out the Sunshine Coast Regional Readers Cup Championship at Immanuel Lutheran College. Congratulations to the team for their excellent preparation, self-motivation and teamwork before and during the event.

Chevallum has a proud tradition of participating in the Readers Cup, which is run annually by the Qld branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) and involves students from state and private schools from across Queensland.

Our team went into the Regional competition knowing they had done all the hard work and could enjoy the challenge that is Readers Cup. With twenty-four schools competing this year we knew it was going to be difficult to qualify in the heats to move onto the final.  Using their best teamwork our team scored the highest points in the heats and moved onto the final where they competed with good spirit and skill.
The final was contested strongly by all teams and the comprehension skills of the final teams were just amazing with only one point separating the teams at times.  However in the end Chevallum won the day with a four point margin, edging out St Thomas More and St. Andrews who finished second and third respectively after battling it out with several tiebreaker questions.  The Chevallum team were very excited to be announced Regional Champions!
Guest speaker was Samantha Wheeler author of Mr Cassowary one of the set texts for Readers Cup this year. Samantha spoke to the students about the inspiration for Mr Cassowary, how her ideas evolved into a novel and her adventures in trying to find and see a cassowary in the wild. As winners our team received book vouchers from sponsor Collins Book Sellers of Caloundra, which are to be thanked for their continued sponsorship of this regional event.
Thank you to all our Readers Cup students for their commitment, hard work and for working so very well as a team to achieve success. Thank you also to all the parents for their support of Readers Cup during the Semester.
Our sustained success in the Readers Cup at a regional and state level is a reflection of our focus on co-operative learning and the strong reading culture here at Chevallum.
